Easter Celebration Without the Resurrection

We recently found that Prague has Easter markets in several squares around the city. Similar to the Christmas markets, the little wooden booths are set up in open spaces (often in front of churches) several weeks before Easter to sell seasonal decorations and products.



They bring some color to the early spring atmosphere. Every market we've seen has an Easter egg tree decorated with colorful ribbons and giant eggs.






Chicks, baby bunnies, and colorful eggs abound in these markets. Colorful spring decorations for your house can be purchased from several vendors.





There are also vendors selling food and drinks. One of the vendors was dressed in a traditional Czech costume, so he could sell his Czech food.


Among all these wares that could be purchased at the Easter market, one thing was missing. Nothing explained the reason for the Easter season. No mention at all of the death and resurrection of our Savior Jesus Christ.


At least in the Christmas markets, a manger with the baby Jesus in it could be purchased. Creches were for sale, or even Christmas tree decorations with the manger in them. At this Easter market nothing close to the religious reason was present.


This made us very sad because this Easter market was directly in front of the huge church pictured on the right. In this city of beautiful churches, so few people know the joy this season brings with the words, "Christ has risen. He is risen indeed, alleluia!"

The Golden Domes of Riga

Orthodox Cathedral - Riga  The golden domes of the Nativity of Christ Cathedral stand out above the trees near Old Town Riga. We walk past this large building in the park not far from our apartment.  The domes shine out to the citizens on sunny days. Surrounded by the trees in the park, the walls of the cathedral are not easy to see in summer, but the size is undeniable. Of course, the golden domes tell everyone that this is a Russian Orthodox Church. After living in St. Petersburg, that is easy for us to define with the Russian style architecture. This cathedral was built between 1876 and 1883 when Latvia was a part of the Russian Empire under the reign of Tsar Alexander II.  Main Door This is the largest Orthodox Church in the entire Baltic area. Why Roosters?

Rooster on top of Dom Cathedral  Last week I wrote about cats being on the roof of a building, but today I'm going to share the reason that we have roosters sitting on the tip of churches in Riga. When we first moved to Riga, we noticed that some churches have the usual crosses on the top of them, but others have roosters sitting on top of the steeple. I couldn't recall ever seeing a rooster on top of a steeple. On doing more research, I was wrong to think that other countries don't have these on steeples. I found out that's it's common in European countries to see roosters on top of Lutheran churches.
